What Is the 6 week project & What we have to achieve for this Assignment ?
We have been given an assignment over the period of 6 weeks to pick from a range of different topics from photography, film, website and events.Working on this project is to manly better our skills in the chosen topic and to make sure we are fully prepared for our final major project.I have picked making a short film with the duration of 5-10 minutes for final project. But a big part of this project to help us become better filmmakers is from researching 10 different directors of our choice who have their own unique style to their films.Out of the 10 directors we have to pick 5 who we are going to be looking at in more detail with their specific style E.g scripts , cinematography and how there directed the actors to get the best performance.
This is a great task as filmmakers to go in to detail of our chosen directors and look at there specific style for example Guy Ritchie director of Snatch 2000 and Lock , Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.Guy Ritchie is well known for his use of langue ‘Slang’, freeze frame , voice-over and Editing Effects.Compared to Stanley Kubrick director of A Clock Work Orange 1971 and Full Mental Jacket 1987. Kubrick has a very unique style for example being the first director to glorify violence in his films with the use of music in a very strange way. The famous scene in A Clock Work Orange where the main characters AKA the droggs rape and kill a woman and leave the husband in a wheelchair. But Kubrick impact onto this scene was using the well know ‘Gene kelly’s Singing In The Rain’ which is a very happy and jolly song but Kubrick expressed this song in such a horrific way.He is also well for the use of classical music in violence scenes.
A Clock Work Orange : Break In Scene
So from looking at these directors I will recreate a 3-5 minute film in the style of my chosen directors. So us as filmmakers can work out what our own style is and put a stamp on our films.
The 10 Directors
- David Fincher (Fight Club 1999)(Se7en 1995)(The Social Network 2010)(The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button)
- Ethan Coen & Joel Coen (No Country For Old Men 2007)(Fargo 1996)(True Grit 2010)
- Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels 1998)(RocknRolla 2008)(Snatch 200)
- Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs 1992)(Pulp Fiction 1994)(Django Unchained 2012)(Inglorious Basterrds 2009)
- Shane Meadows (Dead Man’s Shoes 2004)(This Is England 2006)(Somers Town 2008)
- Stanley Kubrick ( A Clockwork Orange 1971)(The Shining 1980)(Full Mental Jacket 1987)
- Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave 2013)(Shame 2011)(Hunger 2008)
- Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s List 1993)(Saving Private Ryan 1998) (Catch Me if You Can 2002)
- Nick love (Goodbye Charlie Bright 2001)(Football Factory 2004)(The Business 2005)
- Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014)(Moonrise Kingdom 2012)(The Royal Tenebaums 2011)(Fantastic 2009)
- MAYBE CHOSE HIM CHANGE TO DANNY BOYLE
The common Shots in the chosen directors films and their Trade mark style ??????
Stanley Kubrick Films
The common style you will also see in Kubrick film is a lot of One-Point Perspective shots. For example a clip taken from The Shining & Full Mental Jacket.
The Shining
Full Mental Jacket
You will also find Extreme close-ups in Stanley Kubrick films. For example in Full Mental Jacket and A Clock Work Orange. Kubrick likes to create a specify feel to his charters by using this specific stare in a lot of his films, It makes you feel involed with the character and often quite scared with a powerful style.
main part of this project looking at the chosen directors is to help us as filmmakers film our own style for example when you see a Tarantino film you straight away know its his film from the style of the film and this so we can have our own stamp on a piece of work.
.This is a great task to do before going ahead and making a ten minute short film its mainly to helps us find our style and how we can put a stamp on our work.
From researching the directors I have found how different some of them really are for example “Guy Ritchie” Director of “Snatch” and “Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels” he uses a lot of freeze frame and quick cuts compared with director “Stanley Kubrick” director of ” A Clock Work Orange” and ” The Shining” Looks a more lighting techniques then fancy fast edits.
Trade marks of my 5 directors
Guy Ritchie
Stanley Kubrick
Quentin Tarantino
Wes Anderson
Shane Meadows
Guy Ritchie
Guy Ritchie has done many films from (Sherlock Holmes 2009)(Revolver 2005)(RocknRolla 2008) and also the two films i am looking at specifically (Lock,Stock and Smoking Barrels 1998) and (Snatch 2000). The reason I have Picked Lock Stock and two smoking barrels and snatch is because there are both my favourite guy Ritchie films as well as being great examples of his trademark style with ,Freeze Frame , Voice Over , Quick cuts and also telling the story of a narrater.???
Guy Ritchie Trademark Freeze frame Voice over Slow mo Voice over from someone telling the story from the voice over Use if langue He we offer cut from one scene to a another fir example look at last video
Trademark
You can tell a Guy Ritchie film straight away within 5 or 10 minutes into the film. There aren’t many like guy Ritchie with his unquie style with using a lot of voice over in his films to narrates the story. You often see him]
In this two video I’m talking about Guy Ritchie and his trade marks styles.
Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick is one the most respected Directors in the history of filmmaking with having some of the most well known films (A Clockwork Orange 1971)(The Shining 1980)(Full Metal Jack 1987)(2001:A Space Odyssey 1968).As all the others you can always tell which films are made by Stanley Kubrick
Trade Mark
Stanley Kubrick Has many different trade mark styles to his films. This is one of his most famous trade marks as you can see his has used this stare in his films from “A Clock Work orange” ” Full Mental Jacket”The Shining”.As a lot of Stanley Kubrick Films characters are a often quite troubled or have a very sick mind.Who knows why Stanley Kubrick wanted his characters to be like this. But this is the style he creates for his chararters.
Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino one of the most famous filmmakers of all time with classic films such as Pulp Fiction,Reservoir Dogs, inglorious bastards , Django Unchained and the Kill Bill Vol 1&2. With some of the most unique style in his writing, shots, scripts and the use of music and violence in one. With tarantino types there always violence , ???. You can see a tarattino film
The first trade mark you will see in most of Tarantino films is the “Trunk Shot” the only reason I use the word trunk shot is because Tarantino himself calls it a Trunk shot. This is achieved by placing the camera in the back of the car and represents the POV of the characters who are stuck in the trunk. With the trunk shot in his films its always the dominant characters you are looking up at and has the feel of the someone who is powerless.

Notes
The work for this assignment I am looking at all different directors, and there own unique style and comparing how I can learn from there style and then add my own style to a 3 short film but for the final project .
The Directors all have there own style from shots,Scripts and all the effects and camera skills such lens fare , holding a shot for a long while , from all different alngles
I am going to looking to re create a style from my chosen and create a scene recreating the closes I can
And have to create a scence with the specfic dirctors style. (E.g Shots,Content , How long the and what you see these directors add in all there films to put there own stamp on..///
Why Is this A good Idea to do this project before making our final final
Working on this assignment is great because we are looking at 10 of our favourite directors and some of the directors who we not so familiar with and looking at there own unique styles to there films. And looking at there own style is and how researching these directors and by watching there films.By the end of 6 weeks we would have made 5 scenes in the different style of the chosen director.
Ideas for 3-minute scene
